LIGHTNING STRIKES MORE THAN 100 PEOPLE IN 24 HOURS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MONSOON

In the middle of the monsoon, India faces particularly violent and deadly thunderstorms.

As of Thursday, no fewer than 107 people were killed by lightning, 83 in the state of Bihar and 24 in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The majority of the victims are farmers working on their plantations, according to a government source relayed by the AP news agency .

Faced with this terrible toll which could climb further in the coming days, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the regions most affected.

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has announced that financial compensation will be provided to the families of the victims, Times of India said .

It is not, however, the first victims of lightning during the monsoon this year. Since the end of May, deaths have been regularly announced by the Indian media. The country is known for its particularly violent thunderstorms . In 2018, lightning struck 36,749 times in 13 hours in the southern Indian state of Andra Pradesh, a record. For comparison, in France, around fifteen people die this way on average per year.
